Sara Miguel (Coimbra, 1997) is a visual artist who lives and works in Aveiro. She studied International Relations at the University of Coimbra.
Her practice emerges from an intersection of personal memory, fragility, and a dialogue with Africanism, family diaspora memories, and colonial legacies, alongside her own idiosyncratic process through the study of colour and the construction and deconstruction of shapeless figures. Her work is defined by the urgency of her mark-making and a direct approach in which the human figure becomes the primary vessel for translating vulnerability and identity into pictorial matter.
Her solo exhibitions include Origem (Ovar Museum, 2022), Diário (Associação 25 de Abril, Lisbon, 2023), Autorrepresentações – Linhas, formas e cores (Leiria Municipal Library Gallery, 2024), Diário II – Perceções do quotidiano (Coimbra Municipal Museum, 2024), and O regresso a África (Northern Regional Branch of the Medical Association, Porto, 2025).
She featured in the XII Vila Verde International Biennial of Young Art (2022) and was part of the touring group exhibition 25 de abril de 1974 – Vivências e memórias (2024–2025).
Her work Conversas sobre Deus (2022) features on the cover of the book Cara a cara. La creación del psicoterapeuta by Hélder Chambel, published in Spain by Agora Relacional Editores (2023). Her piece A festa appears on the cover of the poetry book Pedaços Meus by Dulcelina Silva Santos (2025), and Ritual covers the e-book Direito da Saúde – Regulação, novas tecnologias e medicamentos de alto custo, published by the Centre for Biomedical Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra (2026).
She contributed two works to the 11th edition of Artzine UltraViolenta (2020) and featured in Le Monde Diplomatiquewith the pieces We are humans, not numbers (October 2022), Autorretrato (March 2023), and Visceral n.º 8 (July 2023).
Honoured with an honourable mention in the Aveiro Jovem Criador competition (2019), Sara Miguel’s work is held in various public and private collections across the USA, France, the UK, Switzerland, and Spain, notably including the Associação 25 de Abril, the Ovar Museum, the Leiria Town Council, and EFCIS & Amílcar Pereira.

I was researching artwork, modern and original, when I discovered, on Instagram, Sara’s publications. It was early 2023 and I started following her. I realized that she is a talented young woman who prints the state of her soul into colourful strokes that reminded me of Kandinsky or even Joan Miró.
And behold, Sara sent me a message inquiring if I wanted to know her collection. My yes was immediate but still, I wanted to see “in loco” her work and I went to Aveiro. I acquired immediately three artworks, but within a few weeks I already had ten.
Three of them decorate the walls of my entrance hall, a magnificent calling card for my home, which has become even brighter.
I have no doubt that this serene young woman will soon have a huge planetary projection. And I will continue to follow her and to be a faithful admirer.

A true “autoditacte”, in the noblest sense of the word, Sara Miguel exalts her art of living in her most varied pieces. The exhibition at the Associação 25 de Abril was a moment of revelation where the different aspects of her work came together to show the strength and diversity of Sara’s inspiration.
One of her artworks lives and breathes in our home, questions and challenges us with every look. It is impossible to describe the mixture of feelings, some friendly, others, at times, frightening, due to the multiplicity of facets of Sara’s work, in this piece as in many others.
